Independiente Medellin have hit form at just the right time and should conclude the regular season in Colombia with a home win over top-eight-chasing America on Thursday.
The People’s Team top the table going into the final round of matches, but only on goals scored and with three teams level on points at the summit, they cannot afford any slip-ups if they want to secure one of the two seeded places in the quadrangular tournament.
Their recent 3-0 home victory over third-placed Atletico Bucaramanga sent out a message that they were back after a two-game winless wobble and they then thrashed Pereira 4-1 in their penultimate league game.
Red Devils’ run may be misleading
This will be no easy task against an America side with plenty to play for and carrying the momentum of a five-game winning run in the league. But the Red Devils have largely been hoovering up points against bottom-half teams and have only beaten one fellow top-10 side since August.
Independiente are the top scorers in the division by around 15% so should be backed to come away with a decisive victory in a match they dare not lose. America have scored just over half the number of goals of their final-day opponents.
Backing the hosts to win with at least three goals in the game makes sense and it is not inconceivable that America score, but our preference in correct score betting is for a 3-0 home victory.
