When Graham Potter was sacked in late September, West Ham had lost five of their first six games, while Liverpool were on a seven-game winning run. Their fortunes have changed in the last couple of months, as the Reds were plunged further into crisis this week.
Arne Slot’s side lost by three clear goals for the third game running, as they fell to a 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven. Last weekend’s thumping at the hands of a Nottingham Forest side who started the game in the drop zone was alarming.
Now Slot’s side head to an improving West Ham side, hoping to end a terrible run that has left them in the bottom half of the table.
Nuno is making progress
West Ham threw away a 2-0 lead over Bournemouth last weekend, but the Hammers have still collected seven points from the last nine available. Home wins over Burnley and Newcastle have helped them out of the bottom three, so they should be confident of troubling Liverpool.
New boss Nuno has taken a West Ham side that looked doomed and made them competitive. It’s worth remembering that Nuno’s Forest side were the only team to win at Anfield last term, with his team taking four points from their two meetings with Liverpool. His style of play should cause problems for the Reds once again.
Liverpool have lost six of their last seven league games, while they’ve been beaten in four of their first six league trips. The visitors have suffered nine defeats in their previous 12 games, so an in-form Hammers side look good value at a shade over 3/1.
Wilson can be a difference-maker again
Nuno’s arrival at Forest helped to turn Chris Wood into a golden boot contender. While Callum Wilson isn’t expected to reach those heights, he his thriving under his new boss.
Wilson has scored three times across his last two games, giving West Ham a focal point in attack which they’ve lacked in recent years. He has little reason to fear this Liverpool defence, so back Wilson to continue his good form in front of goal with a strike on Sunday.
