Nottingham Forest should be able to overcome an in-form FC Midtjylland side at the City Ground on Thursday to give their European campaign a much-needed lift-off.
Forest’s appointment of Europa League-winning ex-Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was designed to bring them success in this competition, but the jury is still out after his first few weeks in the job. The Tricky Trees’ pragmatic style under Nuno Espirito Santo has been uprooted and a new cavalier attitude has seen Forest look vulnerable at the back again.
Real Betis pounded on the door until they found an equaliser in a thrilling 2-2 draw in Seville last week, but that should not detract from the slick play the Premier League side produced in attack.
Brazilian striker looks a cut above
Igor Jesus looks like a quality addition that might be able to bring more to Forest’s game in Europe, particularly away from home. Chris Wood might get the nod to start this fixture, but the Brazilian striker should make an entrance at some stage and he could do plenty of damage to tiring defenders.
Midtjylland shut Sturm Graz out in a 2-0 opening league phase win last week, but the visitors missed a couple of decent chances. The Danes have some lively attacking players themselves in South Korean forward Cho Gue-sung alongside ex-Benfica academy starlet Franculino Dju.
Back Forest to get the job done with at least two goals in the game. Midtjylland take risks at the back and tend to play an open style, which should enable Postecoglou to record his first win for the Reds.
