Burnley banana skin awaits champions
Burnley will pose a tough tactical problem to Liverpool on Sunday with Arne Slot’s champions unlikely to secure the sort of landslide victory that their pre-match odds suggest. The Reds are rated around the 1/3 mark to maintain their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
And, although there is a feeling of inevitability about the Merseysiders winning games at the moment, this one could be a bigger banana skin than say a trip to Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium would be for them right now.
Slot’s side have won two and lost three of their last five Premier League away games, although the three losses all came when they were so far clear of the chasing pack last season that it hardly mattered. However, as trends go, it is interesting to note given they struggled to put 10-man Newcastle away in their first Premier League road trip of the current campaign.
Parker to pose a problem
Slot has built on the foundations Jurgen Klopp laid to make Liverpool more effective in many ways, but teams that sit in and let them have the ball can still cause them problems. Three of the four clubs that had the lowest share of possession in the Premier League last season took points off the Reds.
Nottingham Forest took four points while Crystal Palace and Everton both secured draws against Liverpool, each of them leaving a blueprint for Burnley boss Scott Parker to follow. The Clarets are unbeaten at home in the league since May 2024 when they were last in the top-flight, but even then they were rarely beaten heavily at home.
Burnley have lost only one of their last six top-flight home games by more than one goal and may be able to keep this clash close for long periods. Liverpool will have lots of players returning from international duty at different times this week and that may hinder Slot’s preparations for this Turf Moor trip.
Deadly Dominik on dead balls
The Reds boss may also want to keep some key players fresh for a big upcoming run of matches against Atletico Madrid, Everton and Galatasaray. Alexander Isak is unlikely to start after missing all of pre-season, but there is enough depth in the Reds’ ranks for him to find adequate solutions.
Back Liverpool to win 2-1 here with their goals possibly coming from midfielders or set-piece situations. Dominik Szoboszlai smacked in a beauty of a free-kick against Arsenal and may now be first in the queue at all dangerous dead-ball chances around the box.
