Germany should get back to winning ways when they host Northern Ireland in Cologne on Sunday night, but Michael O’Neill’s side could capitalise on their current lowly ebb.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side have endured a rocky spell, losing three on the bounce to Portugal, France and Slovakia with Thursday’s 2-0 defeat in Bratislava coming as a major surprise. Slovakia deserved their victory as Germany failed to handle their counter-attacking style.
While Nagelsmann’s squad remains stacked with talent, confidence is fragile and Northern Ireland could make life awkward for them in Cologne’s RheineEnergie Stadion – a venue where Germany have failed to win their last three matches.
Both teams can score in Cologne
Michael O’Neill’s men arrive off the back of a 1-0 win over Iceland and a 3-1 victory in Luxembourg, where they demonstrated maturity and tactical discipline. They’ve scored in eight successive matches now and are used to finding the back of the net against the very best.
Northern Ireland have scored in away friendly defeats to Spain, Sweden and Denmark under O’Neill. However, with Florian Wirtz and Niclas Füllkrug expected to start, the hosts should have enough firepower to edge it.
Nick Woltemade, who started against Slovakia, could be a good anytime goalscorer option if he enters the fray. His awkward style and aerial prowess could cause problems in the Northern Irish box.
