West Ham fans have been waiting for the season to end for months now. Graham Potter has failed to hit the ground running after replacing a hapless Julen Lopetegui and it is clear that a summer overhaul is required at the capital club.
The Hammers enter the final day sitting 15th and find themselves in the group of underperforming clubs, along with Manchester United and Tottenham, who are just grateful that the bottom three have been so much worse than everyone else.
Many expected Ipswich to be the best of that trio before the start of the season but last week’s 2-0 loss to Leicester means they look set to finish 19th, with their position unlikely to improve on the final day.
The Tractor Boys will be eager to give their loyal fans a parting gift from the Premier League but their form at Portman Road has been abysmal all season and the Hammers can be the ones to end their disappointing campaign on a high.
Tractor Boys bound for ninth straight home defeat
Only rock-bottom Southampton (6) have taken more points on their own patch than Ipswich, who have earned just six at Portman Road and have conceded 25 goals while losing each of their last eight league matches in Suffolk.
West Ham themselves have struggled this term, with their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest last Sunday marking their 17th Premier League defeat of the season, but there have been occasional positive signs under Potter, most of which have come on the road.
The Hammers have won at Arsenal and Manchester United in their last six away games and they could have earned more points in that run. Late goals denied them a point at Liverpool and three at Brighton and a resurgent Everton, suggesting they have the quality to beat down-in-the-dumps Ipswich at Portman Road.
Soucek set to sign off with another goal
Even if the Hammers are not at their best, in Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they have talented players that the Championship-bound Tractor Boys could only dream of owning and their quality should show on Sunday, just as it did when they won the reverse fixture 4-1.
That victory came under Lopetegui, though, and Potter has adopted a defend-first style at West Ham. The Hammers are yet to score more than twice in a game under the former Chelsea boss and two may be their limit in Suffolk.
A clean sheet could be on the cards, however, as Ipswich have failed to score in four of their last five games, meaning a repeat of the Hammers’ win at Old Trafford may be in store.
