Blues on the back foot ahead of Palace clash
A matter of weeks ago, Chelsea were touted as outsiders for the Premier League title but a disappointing festive period has put the Blues on the back foot ahead of Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace.
Following a run of eight successive wins in all competitions, Enzo Maresca’s men finished 2024 with a draw against Everton and surprise defeats to Fulham and Ipswich Town.
Maresca mixed things up a bit away to Ipswich with Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix handed starts at Portman Road but even with a few changes, Chelsea were expected to win in Suffolk.
The 2-0 win was Ipswich’s first home victory back in the Premier League and that was despite the fact the Tractor Boys saw just 24 per cent of the ball.
It means Chelsea have scored just once in their last three Premier League fixtures and that lack of ruthlessness up top could cost them in the race to make the Champions League places.
Maresca is expected to restore the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Jadon Sancho to the starting lineup when they visit Crystal Palace but it could be another tough outing for the Blues.
Eagles showing signs of improvement under Glasner
Aside from back-to-back defeats to Arsenal in the EFL Cup and Premier League, it was a decent festive period for Crystal Palace, who won three, drew two and lost one of their six league matches in December.
They won away to rivals Brighton and held Manchester City and Bournemouth to draws as part of that run and they can again avoid defeat in this London derby.
Oliver Glasner is getting a tune out of his team again and, while Palace or draw double chance looks the smartest wager, punters should also consider a bet on the 1-1 draw.
Sarr looks a fine pick to net for hosts
Palace have racked up eight league stalemates this season and both teams could find the net with both teams scoring in 13 of Chelsea’s 19 league assignments this term.
As for a goalscorer pick, Ismaila Sarr stepped up to the plate in December and is worth a bet to find the net.
Sarr has scored three goals in Palace’s last four league fixtures, betting a brace away to Brighton, and he will be eager to prove himself against highflyers Chelsea as well.
