Atalanta’s European ambition can be furthered by a win at mid-table Monza on Sunday. La Dea’s away form is a bit hard to understand because Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have recently been able to beat the likes of Napoli and Liverpool quite comfortably on the road.
But they also slipped up at relegation-threatened Cagliari and lost 1-0 in Florence to Fiorentina, albeit the latter game was the first-leg of a Coppa Italia semi-final and not considered a terrible result.
The inconsistency stems from Atalanta’s defence, which was ripped apart by Inter Milan in a 4-0 loss at the San Siro and suffered a mid-game wobble when Juventus scored twice in four minutes last month.
Scamacca and Koopmeiners may be too good for Monza
However, Atalanta’s attacking players carry good form into the run-in with Gianluca Scamacca returning seven goals from his last nine appearances in all competitions and Teun Koopmeiners responsible for eight in his last 11 Serie A outings.
The visitors firepower should see them to victory against a Monza side that has beaten only one club currently above them in the table at home all season.
Rafaelle Palladino’s men occupy the same position they finished their maiden Serie A campaign in, 11th, and lack the quality to bridge the gap to the next tier of teams like Atalanta.
