Rangers and Celtic announced the Old Firm in the best possible fashion as they celebrated easy wins over Motherwell and Hibernian respectively on Wednesday.
The two Glasgow heavyweights will open the year with the biggest game Scottish football has to offer. The kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 UK time on Monday afternoon at Ibrox Stadium.
We should not even mention that these two teams hold the top two positions in the league table at the moment.
However, Celtic have been much more impressive so far in the campaign, winning all but one of 19 matches.
The Bhoys are nine points clear off their biggest rivals atop the Premiership standings. They continued the brilliant form with a demolishing 0-4 victory away at Hibernian on Wednesday evening.
Aaron Mooy starred with a brace, while the likes of Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi were also on target on the occasion.
Furuhashi has been particularly impressive so far in the season. He is the competition’s top scorer with 14 goals to his name.
Nonetheless, we must not underestimate Rangers either. The Gers have won all four games they played after the World Cup break, netting three or more goals in three of these four victories.
Alfredo Morelos bagged a goal and delivered an assist in the 3-0 thumping of Motherwell five days ago and he will no doubts be the main threat to Celtic’s goal here in the absence of Rangers’ top scorer Antonio-Mirko Colak.
