Atletico Madrid suffered an early UEFA Champions League elimination as Yannick Carrasco missed a penalty-kick after a late VAR drama six days ago at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.
Diego Simeone’s men only drew 2-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen last week. This result, paired with FC Porto’s win at Club Burgge, knocked the Spanish outfit out of the elite continental competition even before the final day fixtures.
Atleti will now travel to Estadio Do Dragao to battle Porto in the last Gameweek in Group B, aiming to at least preserve the third place and secure the continuation of their continental journey in UEFA Europa League.
Atletico Madrid are one point above the last-placed Bayer Leverkusen but the German outfit have an easier fixture on the home patch on the final day.
It will be very interesting to see how the players will react, though, following a heartbreaking end to the dramatic match against Leverkusen last Wednesday.
Porto, on the other side, pulled off their best performance of the season in the 0-4 drubbing of group leaders Club Brugge on the road last week.
The team led by Sergio Conceicao controlled the game from the start to the end, scoring four goals from nine shots on target on Belgian soil.
Porto can now even climb to the top of the group standings and thus secure an easier opposition in the knockout phase of the competition if they beat Club Brugge’s result in the other game in the group.
